"Mach' das nicht..."
Zur Verarbeitung negativer Handlungsanweisungen

Abstract
Against the background of current psycholinguistic theories of comprehension - the propositional
account and the mental models account - the interpretation and mental representation of verbal
negatives has been studied in two experiments. Processing latencies and recognition scores for
the negative instructions (choose a clock, namely, not the small one) served as
indicators for the cognitive structures and processes involved in the comprehension of negation.
In the first experiment, affirmatives and negatives were contrasted; in the second experiment,
negative-affirmative expressions (not the small one but the large one) were compared
to affirmative-negative expressions (the large one but not the small one). The results
are consistent with the view that comprehension comprises the construction of multiple
representations which relate to the states of affairs in question as well as to the verbal
expression.
