Definition and empirical investigations

Abstract

SFB 360-Project C4 "Participants' co-ordination of syntax in discourse" researchs co-operative sentence generation in task-oriented dialogues. An often used resource for co-ordinating syntactic structure is extraposition, i.e. a kind of syntactic construction exploiting the so-called Nachfeld: Nachtrag or Ausklammerung. Before grammatically analysing co-operative realised sentences using the Nachfeld we first investigated turn-internal cases of Ausklammerung each generated by one speaker only in the task-oriented dialogues of the SFB 360-corpus "Wir bauen jetzt also ein Flugzeug ..." (1997).

Cases of Ausklammerung as Du hast doch eben einen Würfel angeschraubt mit der roten Schraube (you have indeed just now a cube screwed on with a red screw) were realised approx. 100 times in the 9 experimental task-oriented dialogues. Our work pursues two aims:

  1. We want to make a critical contribution to the clarification of the term "Ausklammerung" within the framework of a descriptive grammar (Chapter 2). To this end we first discuss existing definitions in order to examine their basic concepts: clausal fields (Satzfelder) and clausal frame (Satzklammer). Then we present our definition of the term "Ausklammerung". Finally we distinguish/delimit "Ausklammerung" from our term "Nachtrag".
  2. We present the results of our empirical investigations of Ausklammerung-constructions (Chapter 3). These results are based on the first nine SFB-corpus' dialogues. A detailed collection of the investigated Ausklammerung-constructions can be found in the appendix.
As mentioned above we concentrate in this report on the investigation of cases of Ausklammerung realised by one person. Co-operative generated cases will be discussed in a later report.
