Abstract
A grammar formalism for a speech understanding system that follows the principles of
cognitive speech processing must at least be able to make possible incremental and
interactive processing. We take the attachment of prepositional phrases as an example
to demonstrate that Combinatory Categorial Grammar (CCG) meets the cognitive
demands. In addition the particular stages in processing can be represented in a
transparent way by means of derivational structures. The accuracy achieved by CCG leads
to hypotheses about the processes of understanding that depend on the lexical categories
of a word. Furthermore, a distinction between incrementality based on words and
incrementality based on constituents is suggested.
